OK, I was reading Bruce Schneier’s blog and ran across a very interesting story. If you don’t know who Bruce is he is a world renowned crypto-analyst and the author of one of the definitive books on ciphers, Applied Cryptography. I would have to rank Bruce as a member of the Wicked Smart class of people. I can’t really think of anyone of his caliber in the Bush administration, at least not since Richard Clarke was fired for the cardinal sin of disagreement.
Anyway Bruce believes that the obsessive secrecy that has permeated our government since the Texas crew took over actually helps terrorists. Now it seems that Jim Judd, director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, agrees with Bruce! Not only that but Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller the head of Britain’s MI5 security service has chimed in agreeing as well.
So, does W and Company really believe that all this secrecy and violation of rights helps fight terrorism or is there another reason. Like maybe massive secrecy hiding gross incompetence? Not that Bruce asserted that – he’s too nice a guy.
